December 21, Day Two of Week Four – The Way of Peace though Peace

Luke 2:7 “She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”

Mary 3

Mary, Did You Know?  Song Link
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your Baby Boy has come to make you new?
This Child that you delivered will soon deliver you.

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy will calm the storm with His hand?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little Baby you kissed the face of God?
Mary did you know?

The blind will see.
The deaf will hear.
The dead will live again.
The lame will leap.
The dumb will speak
The praises of The Lamb.

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
The sleeping Child you’re holding is the Great, I Am.

Reflection: She had no brand new baby blankets to wrap her child. She had no sterile cloths to clean him. There was not a nursery filled with bright colors and brimming with clothes, books, toys and a rocker in the corner. She was sitting on hay, surrounded by large animals and stagnant odors. She laid her baby in a feeding trough as his bed. Did any of this permeate her thinking in that moment? Did she lament the dingy quarters where they were staying? Was she angry at the people who couldn’t make room for a pregnant woman? Did she complain that Joseph should have planned better so they would have a proper place to stay? Was she afraid the animals might harm her child? Did she holler at God for placing her in such a situation? None of this is mentioned in any scripture. By all accounts, Mary was able to accept whatever plight facing her with grace and gratitude. Another facet of faith wrapped in an unconventional bundle of peace.

Action: So where do we get the grace and gratitude of Mary? How do we grow that inside us? Today, face hurdles with grace. Instead of grumbles, find solutions in peace and calm. Think of Mary, standing in that stable, contractions moving through her body, looking for a place to lie down and then later, something to wrap her child in and a place to lay him. Accept moments of irritation with gratitude for an opportunity to grow your faith, in recognizing that today’s irritations are forgotten by tomorrow. Breathe in patience and breathe out peace.

Dear God, thank you for your gift of Mary, filled with the grace you long for us to know. Help us to look into the wind of troubles and feel your peace settle around us. Teach us to respond with gratitude for all that comes our way, the heartwarming and heartbreaking, knowing we don’t walk alone. Let us lean into you and your gentle comfort strengthen our tenderness. Wrapping ourselves in Mary’s grace, Amen.
