December 18, Day Six of Week Three – The Way of Peace though Joy

Luke 1: 57 – 64  “When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son.  Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.  They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”  Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child.  He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”  Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God.”

Hello my name is 2

Hello My Name Is  Song Link

Hello, my name is regret
I’m pretty sure we have met
Every single day of your life
I’m the whisper inside
That won’t let you forget

Hello, my name is defeat
I know you recognize me
Just when you think you can win
I’ll drag you right back down again
‘Til you’ve lost all belief

Oh, these are the voices. Oh, these are the lies
And I have believed them for the very last time

REFRAIN  Hello, my name is child of the one true King
I’ve been saved, I’ve been changed, I have been set free
“Amazing Grace” is the song I sing
Hello, my name is child of the one true King

I am no longer defined
By all the wreckage behind
The one who makes all things new
Has proven it’s true
Just take a look at my life REFRAIN

What love the Father has lavished upon us that we should be called His children
I am a child of the one true King
What love the Father has lavished upon us that we should be called His children  REFRAIN

Reflection: God breaks societal rules time and again.  Even though John was not a family name, it was to be the name of Zechariah and Elizabeth’s son because God had told them.  Even though Mary was a virgin, she was pregnant.  Even though the shepherds were the lowest on the social strata at the time, God had his angels announce to them first the news of the birth of Jesus.  Examples abound in the Bible, stories of God flaunting man’s rules, reminding that God’s word is the only one that must be followed.  Today, societal norms are bursting all over the globe.  It creates uneasiness, uncertainty and fear.  It brings out the best and worst in people.  No one is immune to reactions to the changes that keep raining down on our ever changing world.  When we find ourselves fighting inside, trying to find a way to balance old and new, change and tradition, stop.  Ask yourself, where is God’s word in this?  Find God and you find answers.  1 Corinthians 16:14  tells us, Let all that you do be done in love.”  What if we all started from this place?

Action:  What is happening in our world is bothering you the most?  How can you make changes in your life to respond?  How can you get involved to support what matters to you?  How can you bring God’s love to bear?  Make a list and get started.  I know, it’s the middle of December, the epicenter of Christmas activity.  Make a start anyway.  Even if it’s a little start.  Great journeys begin with a small step.

Dear God, Ride with us closely as we are only a week away from Christmas Day.  Events, activities, and plans are at an overwhelming pitch, cramming the days with non-stop action.  Help us find time to pause and pull you into the day.  Let us use your words to guide us through this world that revolves with changing ideas.  Give us clarity through the lens of your love to see our way, acting as you would, flying in the face of the rules of man and holding true to your commands.  As a child of the one true king, Amen.
