December 17, Day Five of Week Three – The Way of Peace though Joy

Luke 1:  39 – 45   “At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth.  When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.  In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!  But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?  As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.  Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

That’s What Friends are For  Song Link

And I never thought I’d feel this way
And as far as I’m concerned
I’m glad I got the chance to say
That I do believe, I love you

And if I should ever go away
Well, then close your eyes and try
To feel the way we do today
And then if you can remember

REFRAIN  Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That’s what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I’ll be on your side forever more
That’s what friends are for

Well, you came in loving me
And now there’s so much more I see
And so by the way
I thank you

Oh and then for the times when we’re apart
Well, then close your eyes and know
The words are coming from my heart
And then if you can remember  REFRAIN (x3)

Reflection:  Elizabeth and Mary were cousins.  It is to her cousin she hurries to tell her good news and share in Elizabeth’s excitement to be an expectant mom.  This story always calls to my heart.  My nearly 50 first cousins and I have a strong bond and we are always there for the good, the bad and the middling.  In our family, cousins were just siblings that grew up in other houses.  We love each other unabashedly.   We have known each other forever and there is never a reason to be other than who we are.  We talk over each other and interrupt and disagree, sometimes loudly. All of that said, if you need us, we are there no matter what else has been going on.  We are proud of our strong family bond and it has been passed on to the next generation and the ones beyond.  It is a large part of who we are.  My cousins are always my home base.

Action:  Who do you run to when you have news to share?  Who holds your heart without expectation, accepting you exactly where you are?   You know, those people in your life who fill you up, instead of draining you?   Who makes you sing instead of cry?  Reach out to them today and thank them.  If it’s been a while since you’ve gotten together, pick a date to do that.

Dear God, Thank you for putting people in our lives that fill us with joy.  Life abounds with those who wait to see us trip, will laugh when we fall and walk away without reaching out to pick us up.  Lord, we need those that love us best to be our soft place to fall and to cheer when we stay upright and keep moving.  They fill our world with your grace and blast your love to us.   Shining and smiling, Amen.
