December 14, Day Two of Week Three – The Way of Peace though Joy

Luke 1: 18 – 20 “Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years. The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”

Snow falling 6Believe Song Link

Children sleeping, snow is softly falling
Dreams are calling like bells in the distance
We were dreamers not so long ago
But one by one we all had to grow up
When it seems the magic’s slipped away
We find it all again on Christmas day
REFRAIN: Believe in what your heart is saying
Hear the melody that’s playing
There’s no time to waste
There’s so much to celebrate
Believe in what you feel inside
And give your dreams the wings to fly
You have everything you need
If you just believe

Trains move quickly to their journey’s end
Destinations are where we begin again
Ships go sailing far across the sea
Trusting starlight to get where they need to be
When it seems that we have lost our way
We find ourselves again on Christmas day REFRAIN

Reflection: The first time I say Polar Express, it was with all our kids and grandkids in 3D at the Imax. The words to this song find me remembering my granddaughter Breeanna, who was three years old, blonde curls circling her innocence. She was sitting beside me, on her dad’s lap. In the opening sequence, it is snowing. I watched her little hands reach for the 3D snowflakes because she believed they were real. Belief is a powerful way to live. My faith is not something outside of me but something that lives in me every day, with every breath, finding itself out loud in my actions and my words. I struggle to match my beliefs and my words and actions. Sometimes, I sail and other times, I crash. It is a daily travail. But no matter how I fare with words and action, I always believe. It is that simple and that complex.

Action: Today, hear the words in the refrain of the song. “Believe in what your heart is saying. Hear the melody that’s playing. There’s no time to waste, there’s so much to celebrate. Believe in what you feel inside and give your dreams the wings to fly. You have everything you need, if you just believe.” Go do that. Live today with a child’s wonder and willingness to believe. In God. In yourself. Watch the Polar Express tonight. It’s about far more than Santa.

Dear God, Christmas always brings us back to you. Even if during other days, we drift away, Christmas calls our child heart to your story and songs. We fill ourselves with your words and beckon you into our lives. Help us hold these holy moments near and let them move us ever closer to you. Let our arms, legs and tongues walk and talk you into our every days. Let our eyes see with child wonder this world you have given us. As a child of God, Amen.
